Rutba Orders on film: a takeaway’s order from the board to the customer’s door

A three minute film follows one order at Saffron Lane, an invented takeaway that delivers its own food: across the order board, packed in Dispatch, onto a rider’s run, signed for at the door, and followed by the customer on a tracking page with no account.

A takeaway that delivers its own orders runs a small logistics company every evening. Rutba Orders is the hub where web, marketplace and phone orders land and are packed, dispatched and delivered, with a Rider app for the last mile. The film below follows a single order at Saffron Lane, a pizza and curry takeaway we invented, from the menu to the doorstep.

Rutba Orders: from the order board to the customer’s door (3:02).

The order board

A customer picks a twelve inch pizza from the menu online and pays, and the order is on the shop’s board, which shows every order by the stage it has reached. When the kitchen starts, the order is moved to Preparing from the card itself, and everyone sees the same board. Once it is cooked and bagged it moves to Awaiting Pickup, and its delivery is raised without anybody typing it in.

Dispatch

Dispatch sees the new delivery at once, waiting to be packed. It is packed as one parcel with its own barcode, keeping the time promised to the customer. Auto-assign places every ready delivery onto the evening’s runs in one step, and when the parcel is loaded the run departs. From then the list of stops is fixed, so the shop and the rider work from the same run.

The rider at the door

The rider has the run in the Rider app on a phone, each stop in order. At the door one tap records the arrival, and the handover is recorded with the customer’s signature as proof of delivery. With every stop done, the app tells the rider to head back.

What the customer sees

The customer follows the delivery on a tracking page with no account to make. It says when to expect the parcel and when theirs is the next stop, then shows it delivered, how the delivery was proved, and every step it took. Back on the board, the order has moved itself to Delivered: recording the handover closed the order, and nobody had to update it by hand.

How the Rutba products fit together for a small business

A shop that sells at a counter and online, delivers some orders itself and has a bookkeeper uses five Rutba products. They work as one business because they share one product list, one stock number, one order and one customer.

The server prices the refund, not the till

A till that adds up its own refund can pay out more than the sale took. Returns and exchanges are now priced on the server from the original sale, and at the order desk the person who collected the cash no longer confirms it.
