Rutba

Compare / Head to head

BambooHR vs Workday

Two products for two different companies. Most shortlists containing both are really a question about what size the business is going to be, not about which HR system is better.

Checked 1 September 2026

We are not a neutral party, and you should read this knowing that. Rutba makes software that competes with both products on this page, and there is a section about us at the bottom. Everything above it is written from what each vendor publishes about their own product, dated, with no prices reproduced and nothing said about anyone’s roadmap, finances or customers. If we have described either product incorrectly, tell us and we will correct it and say that we did.

The actual decision

What you are really choosing between.

Whether you need an HR system your team will use every day, or an HCM platform your organisation can be run and audited on. Buying the second when you needed the first is the more expensive mistake, and it is the common one.

BambooHR

BambooHR LLC

An HR information system covering the employee record, onboarding, time off, performance and reporting, with US payroll and benefits administration available alongside it and a large marketplace of integrations for everything else.

Head to head

Where they actually differ.

Only the rows that differ. A comparison table padded with things both products do equally well is a table designed to be long rather than useful.

Which to pick

Real reasons on both sides.

A matchup where one option never wins is not a comparison, and every reader can tell.

Choose BambooHR if…

  • You are under roughly five hundred employees in one or two countries
  • The people who will use it every day are an HR team, not an HR systems team
  • You want it running this quarter rather than next year
  • US payroll and benefits from the same vendor is useful to you

Choose Workday if…

  • You employ thousands of people across multiple countries
  • Multi-country statutory compliance is a real obligation rather than a future one
  • Workforce planning and skills analytics are things somebody is accountable for
  • You are large enough that the implementation is a normal cost of doing business

And now the part where we talk about ourselves

Where Rutba fits, on the same axes.

Constrained to what the comparison above actually examined. If neither product was measured on something, we do not get to win it here.

On the axis these two are compared on, we sit with BambooHR

Self-serve, for small and mid-sized companies, operable by an HR generalist. We are not an enterprise HCM and are not becoming one — the comparison page for Workday says so directly.

The difference is what happens on either side of HR

Neither of these owns the clock the hours came from or the ledger the pay run posts into. Rutba ships the shared time clock, the attendance rebuild, the pay run and the accounts it lands in — so the hours are recorded rather than typed, and the cost is posted rather than exported and reconciled.

Where BambooHR is ahead of us, plainly

Onboarding workflows, performance cycles and US benefits administration. Two of our seven People apps are scaffolds and our own product page labels them so.

Weighing these two?

Tell us which way you are leaning and why. We will tell you honestly whether we belong on the shortlist at all — there are comparisons on this site where the answer is no.
