Compare / Head to head
BambooHR vs Personio
The same product category on two continents. The deciding factor is usually where your employees are and who runs your payroll.
Checked 1 September 2026
We are not a neutral party, and you should read this knowing that. Rutba makes software that competes with both products on this page, and there is a section about us at the bottom. Everything above it is written from what each vendor publishes about their own product, dated, with no prices reproduced and nothing said about anyone’s roadmap, finances or customers. If we have described either product incorrectly, tell us and we will correct it and say that we did.
The actual decision
What you are really choosing between.
Whether you need an HR system that assumes American employment practice or European one — and whether you want payroll inside the HR system or handed to a provider.
BambooHR
BambooHR LLC
An HR information system covering the employee record, onboarding, time off, performance and reporting, with US payroll and benefits administration available alongside it and a large marketplace of integrations for everything else.
Personio
Personio SE & Co. KG
An HR operating system for European small and mid-sized companies: employee records, recruiting, onboarding, absence and time tracking, performance, and payroll preliminaries handed to a local payroll provider.
Head to head
Where they actually differ.
Only the rows that differ. A comparison table padded with things both products do equally well is a table designed to be long rather than useful.
| BambooHR | Personio | |
|---|---|---|
| Home market | United States, and it shows in the employment model and the benefits proposition. | Europe, strongest in German-speaking markets; local practice built in rather than configured. |
| Payroll | US payroll and benefits available from the same vendor. | Prepares payroll and hands it to a local provider, which is the European norm. |
| Recruiting | Applicant tracking included. | Applicant tracking with a careers surface, and a mature one. |
| Absence and working-time law | Configurable, and configured by you. | Modelled around European absence and working-time practice. |
| Works councils and co-determination | Not a concept the product assumes. | Understood, because its home market requires it. |
Which to pick
Real reasons on both sides.
A matchup where one option never wins is not a comparison, and every reader can tell.
Choose BambooHR if…
- Your employees are mainly in the United States
- You want HR, payroll and benefits from one vendor
- Your existing tooling and your accountant are American
Choose Personio if…
- Your employees are mainly in Europe, particularly DACH markets
- Your payroll provider relationship is settled and staying
- Works councils, European absence law or local contract practice are real requirements
- Recruiting is part of the requirement rather than an afterthought
And now the part where we talk about ourselves
Where Rutba fits, on the same axes.
Constrained to what the comparison above actually examined. If neither product was measured on something, we do not get to win it here.
Neither of these runs your payroll and your ledger
BambooHR runs US payroll but hands the cost to your accounting system; Personio hands the payroll itself to a provider. Rutba runs the pay run and posts it, split by cost centre, into the accounts your reports come from.
We are neither American nor German by design
Payroll is built around configurable deduction rules and statutory remittances rather than one jurisdiction. That is a weakness where a market needs deep local specifics and a strength where a business spans several.
Where both are ahead of us
Recruiting. Personio’s applicant tracking is mature and BambooHR ships one; our Recruit app is scaffolded with no features and we would tell you to keep an ATS until it is not.

Both of these against us, and against the rest.
Written to the same standard: sourced to what each vendor publishes, dated, and naming where each one wins.
The pillar
Rutba vs BambooHR
The default HRIS for small and mid-sized companies, and deservedly so. The comparison is about what sits on either side of it — the clock before, and the ledger after.
The pillar
Rutba vs Personio
The European mid-market HR platform, strongest in German-speaking markets. Mature where we are new, and narrower where we are wide.
