Rutba vs Odoo

The closest competitor by shape — modular, open core, and covering most of a business. The differences are the workspace, and how the modules are priced.

What Odoo is

A modular business suite with an open-source community edition and a paid enterprise edition, covering CRM, sales, inventory, manufacturing, accounting and much else, with a large third-party app ecosystem.

Who it genuinely suits

  • Businesses with the appetite to configure, or a partner to configure for them
  • Anyone who wants an open-source core they could in principle self-host
  • Companies whose requirement is unusual enough to need the app ecosystem

Where they win

What Odoo does better than us.

Every comparison page on this site has this section and none of them is empty. If it were, you would be right to discount the rest of the page.

The ecosystem is enormous, and ours does not exist

Thousands of third-party modules, a large partner network and a long tail of community work. If your requirement is niche, someone has probably already built it for Odoo. That is a real advantage and it is not one we can claim.

Maturity

It has been shipped, deployed and stress-tested for years across every kind of business. Every product we sell is younger than that, and several are labelled early access on our own site.

A genuine open-source path

The community edition is real software you can run yourself. Our platform is not open source.

Where we win

What Rutba does that this does not.

Argued from how the products are built rather than from a feature list, because feature lists are the part of a comparison that goes stale first.

The workspace is included rather than assumed

Odoo runs your business and expects your mail, files, documents and meetings to come from Google or Microsoft. Rutba ships those as part of the family, logging back to the business record they concern — so an email about an order is on the order.

No per-application arithmetic

Odoo prices by the applications you switch on, on top of a per-user platform charge, which makes the total a calculation you redo every time you add something. Rutba prices per product with one invoice, and adding a product is a subscription change.

The platform services stand on their own

Our sending, storage, publishing and video products are sold and used independently of the suite. In Odoo they are features of Odoo.

And the one that is not a feature

Odoo S.A. will not build what you ask for. We will.

That is not a criticism of them — a vendor at their scale has to weigh your request against every other customer it touches, and schedule it behind a roadmap set a year out. Your request is a rounding error in their planning, honestly so. We are small, and the people building the product are the people you talk to: what helps everyone goes into the product at no extra charge, what is specific to you is quoted as the work it is, and when the answer is no you get the reason.

On price: We do not reproduce Odoo S.A.’s prices here. A list price is published and fair to quote, and it is stale within a quarter — which would make this page quietly wrong in a way you could not see. Read today’s number from them, and ours is on our pricing page in full, tier by tier.

Moving

What leaving Odoo actually involves.

The question that decides this is not whether you should move but whether you can. This is the honest version, including the parts that do not come across.

  1. 1

Master data — customers, suppliers, products, chart of accounts — exports cleanly and imports cleanly. This is the easy half and it is most of the volume.

  2. 2

Open transactions — unpaid invoices, open orders, stock on hand — need a cut-over date and an opening balance rather than a full history import.

  3. 3

Custom modules do not come across. If you have paid for bespoke Odoo development, that is the real cost of moving and you should price it before anything else.

  4. 4

Historical accounting is usually best left in place, read-only, for the statutory retention period.

No customer has done this yet. The steps above describe the mechanism — what exports, what imports, what has to be rebuilt — rather than a migration we have run. When one has been run, this section will say whose it was.

Our actual recommendation

If you have a working Odoo installation with custom modules and a partner who knows it, stay. The reason to look at us is if you are also paying separately for a workspace, or if the per-app pricing has stopped being predictable.

If you did move

The products this comparison is about.

With their real availability labels, which apply inside a comparison exactly as they do everywhere else on this site.

Note before you compare: Rutba Mail is not generally available yet. Any row above that we win on it is a claim about what ships, not about what you can buy today.
