Rutba vs Twilio

The programmable-communications layer most software is built on, including a great deal of the software on this page. A comparison for developers rather than for buyers.

What Twilio is

Communications as an API: programmable messaging, voice, email and verification, with global reach, extensive documentation and a very large developer ecosystem.

Who it genuinely suits

  • Engineering teams building communications into their own product
  • Anyone needing global SMS or voice reach through one API
  • Companies whose requirement is a building block rather than an application

Where they win

What Twilio does better than us.

Every comparison page on this site has this section and none of them is empty. If it were, you would be right to discount the rest of the page.

Reach, maturity and documentation

Global coverage, deliverability operations and API documentation that is genuinely a benchmark. Our platform services are smaller in every dimension.

Breadth of channels

SMS, WhatsApp, voice, video, verification and email across a very large number of markets.

It is a building block, honestly sold as one

Twilio does not pretend to be an application, which is the right posture for what it is.

Where we win

What Rutba does that this does not.

Argued from how the products are built rather than from a feature list, because feature lists are the part of a comparison that goes stale first.

The application is already there

With Twilio you build the thing that sends. With Rutba Send you configure it, and the customer it is being sent to is a record in the same system.

Our platform services sell standalone too

Send, Media, Social and Vision have their own credentials, plans and limits, and work alongside whatever else you run. The difference is that adopting one puts a business system within reach rather than a further integration.

One bill for the sending and the software using it

Rather than a communications bill, a software bill, and the engineering that joins them.

And the one that is not a feature

Twilio Inc. will not build what you ask for. We will.

That is not a criticism of them — a vendor at their scale has to weigh your request against every other customer it touches, and schedule it behind a roadmap set a year out. Your request is a rounding error in their planning, honestly so. We are small, and the people building the product are the people you talk to: what helps everyone goes into the product at no extra charge, what is specific to you is quoted as the work it is, and when the answer is no you get the reason.

On price: We do not reproduce Twilio Inc.’s prices here. A list price is published and fair to quote, and it is stale within a quarter — which would make this page quietly wrong in a way you could not see. Read today’s number from them, and ours is on our pricing page in full, tier by tier.

Moving

What leaving Twilio actually involves.

The question that decides this is not whether you should move but whether you can. This is the honest version, including the parts that do not come across.

  1. 1

This is rarely a migration and usually a scope question: are you building communications, or buying software that communicates?

  2. 2

If you are building a product on programmable messaging, stay with Twilio. We are not that.

  3. 3

If you built an internal tool on Twilio because no product did what you needed, that is the conversation worth having.

  4. 4

Ask us for the current API description of the service you care about — the reference documentation is thin and our docs hub says so.

No customer has done this yet. The steps above describe the mechanism — what exports, what imports, what has to be rebuilt — rather than a migration we have run. When one has been run, this section will say whose it was.

Our actual recommendation

Twilio is infrastructure and we are mostly an application. If you have engineers and a product to build, use Twilio. If you have a business and a job to do, the comparison is worth making.

If you did move

The products this comparison is about.

With their real availability labels, which apply inside a comparison exactly as they do everywhere else on this site.

Note before you compare: Rutba Calls is not generally available yet. Any row above that we win on it is a claim about what ships, not about what you can buy today.
