Rutba vs Sage, QuickBooks and Xero
The accounting-first incumbents. Excellent at the books, and the reason your stock, orders and CRM ended up in four other places.

What Sage, QuickBooks and Xero is
Accounting and bookkeeping platforms with strong compliance features, bank feeds and accountant ecosystems, extended by large app marketplaces for everything that is not accounting.
Who it genuinely suits
- Businesses whose only real system need is the books
- Anyone whose accountant works in one of them and would rather not change
- Companies happy to assemble the rest from marketplace apps
Where they win
What Sage, QuickBooks and Xero does better than us.
Every comparison page on this site has this section and none of them is empty. If it were, you would be right to discount the rest of the page.
Your accountant already uses one
That is not a small thing. Filing, compliance and the relationship all run more smoothly when the software is the one they see every day.
Bank feeds and local compliance
Deep, mature, and covering more jurisdictions than we do. If you file in a country we have not thought about, they have.
The app marketplaces are large
For any given requirement there is probably a connector. It is a real answer, even if it is the one this comparison is about.
Where we win
What Rutba does that this does not.
Argued from how the products are built rather than from a feature list, because feature lists are the part of a comparison that goes stale first.
The books are a module of a business, not the whole product
A sale, a stock movement and a payroll run post to the ledger because they happened in the same system — rather than arriving as an import from four marketplace apps.
No connector tax
The four or five marketplace subscriptions around the accounting package are usually more, in total, than the accounting package. And each one is a failure mode you own.
Drill-down actually reaches the transaction
A number in the ledger leads back to the order line that caused it, because the order line is in the same system.
And the one that is not a feature
Sage, Intuit and Xero will not build what you ask for. We will.
That is not a criticism of them — a vendor at their scale has to weigh your request against every other customer it touches, and schedule it behind a roadmap set a year out. Your request is a rounding error in their planning, honestly so. We are small, and the people building the product are the people you talk to: what helps everyone goes into the product at no extra charge, what is specific to you is quoted as the work it is, and when the answer is no you get the reason.

On price: We do not reproduce Sage, Intuit and Xero’s prices here. A list price is published and fair to quote, and it is stale within a quarter — which would make this page quietly wrong in a way you could not see. Read today’s number from them, and ours is on our pricing page in full, tier by tier.
Moving
What leaving Sage, QuickBooks and Xero actually involves.
The question that decides this is not whether you should move but whether you can. This is the honest version, including the parts that do not come across.
- 1
Chart of accounts, customers, suppliers and opening balances export and import cleanly. This is a well-supported path.
- 2
Move on a period boundary — a financial year end if you can, a quarter if you cannot.
- 3
Leave the historical years where they are, read-only, for the statutory retention period. Nobody needs them live.
- 4
Tell your accountant before, not after. The migration is easy; the surprise is not.
No customer has done this yet. The steps above describe the mechanism — what exports, what imports, what has to be rebuilt — rather than a migration we have run. When one has been run, this section will say whose it was.
Our actual recommendation
If the books are genuinely all you need, keep what you have — we would not move you for the sake of it. The comparison starts to matter when the accounting package has five apps bolted to it and a spreadsheet in the middle.
If you did move
The products this comparison is about.
With their real availability labels, which apply inside a comparison exactly as they do everywhere else on this site.
