Rutba

Compare / Head to head

Hootsuite vs Sprout Social

The enterprise shortlist, and a decision made on reporting and support rather than on posting — which both do well.

Checked 6 September 2026

We are not a neutral party, and you should read this knowing that. Rutba makes software that competes with both products on this page, and there is a section about us at the bottom. Everything above it is written from what each vendor publishes about their own product, dated, with no prices reproduced and nothing said about anyone’s roadmap, finances or customers. If we have described either product incorrectly, tell us and we will correct it and say that we did.

The actual decision

What you are really choosing between.

Who reads the output. If social performance is presented to people who never open the tool, that report is most of what you are buying, and it is where these two actually differ.

Hootsuite

Hootsuite Inc.

A social media management platform covering publishing and bulk scheduling, a shared inbox for comments and messages, listening and monitoring streams, analytics with competitor benchmarking, team roles and approvals, and a large directory of third-party app integrations. Sold per seat in tiers, with the listening and analytics depth reserved for the higher ones.

Head to head

Where they actually differ.

Only the rows that differ. A comparison table padded with things both products do equally well is a table designed to be long rather than useful.

Which to pick

Real reasons on both sides.

A matchup where one option never wins is not a comparison, and every reader can tell.

Choose Hootsuite if…

  • You want one tool across a wide range of jobs at a wide range of prices
  • The app directory matters — it connects to what marketing already runs
  • Your team is comfortable and switching costs more than it gains

Choose Sprout Social if…

  • A board or a client reads your social reporting
  • Review management and listening are part of the remit
  • Procurement wants role separation, audit trails and an account team

And now the part where we talk about ourselves

Where Rutba fits, on the same axes.

Constrained to what the comparison above actually examined. If neither product was measured on something, we do not get to win it here.

We are not in this comparison, and that is the point

Neither of these is competing on publishing — they are competing on listening, reporting and governance, none of which we do. If that is the decision in front of you, buy one of them.

The question worth asking first

A great deal of what makes both worth their price is used by one person a quarter. An organisation that mostly needs to publish dependably, with sign-off, is paying per seat for two thirds it does not open.

Publishing other systems can drive

Where we are genuinely different from both: the CRM, the campaign, a release pipeline or an assistant can publish through the same documented surface the console uses, without anybody opening a tool. Enterprise suites treat integration as an import; here it is the product.

If you looked at us

The products this comparison touches.

With their real availability labels, which apply inside a comparison exactly as they do everywhere else.

Weighing these two?

Tell us which way you are leaning and why. We will tell you honestly whether we belong on the shortlist at all — there are comparisons on this site where the answer is no.
