Compare / Head to head
Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace vs Slack
A workspace suite that includes chat against the chat product most teams actually reach for. The real question is whether you are choosing at all, since most companies end up with both.
Checked 1 September 2026
We are not a neutral party, and you should read this knowing that. Rutba makes software that competes with both products on this page, and there is a section about us at the bottom. Everything above it is written from what each vendor publishes about their own product, dated, with no prices reproduced and nothing said about anyone’s roadmap, finances or customers. If we have described either product incorrectly, tell us and we will correct it and say that we did.
The actual decision
What you are really choosing between.
Whether team messaging should come from the vendor that already holds your mail and files, or be the best product at that one job. The honest answer for most organisations is that this is a licensing decision dressed as a product one.

Head to head
Where they actually differ.
Only the rows that differ. A comparison table padded with things both products do equally well is a table designed to be long rather than useful.
| Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 | Slack | |
|---|---|---|
| What you are buying | Mail, files, documents, meetings and identity, with chat included. | Messaging, done extremely well, and not much else. |
| Marginal cost of the chat | Effectively nothing — it is in a licence you already hold. | A separate per-seat subscription. |
| Product quality at messaging | Good, and improving; rarely anybody’s favourite. | The one most teams prefer, and it shows in adoption. |
| Ecosystem | Deep integration with the rest of the suite and its identity. | Thousands of third-party apps and a workflow builder people use. |
| Compliance tooling | Retention, legal hold and eDiscovery across the whole suite at once. | Substantial, and covering one channel. |
Which to pick
Real reasons on both sides.
A matchup where one option never wins is not a comparison, and every reader can tell.
Choose Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 if…
- You already pay for the suite and the marginal cost of another chat tool is hard to justify
- Compliance and retention need to span mail, files and messaging together
- Identity, device management and eDiscovery from one vendor is a requirement
Choose Slack if…
- Adoption is the thing you are optimising for, and people will actually use it
- Your workflows live in its app ecosystem
- Cross-company channels with customers and partners are part of how you work
And now the part where we talk about ourselves
Where Rutba fits, on the same axes.
Constrained to what the comparison above actually examined. If neither product was measured on something, we do not get to win it here.
Neither side of this can attach a conversation to an order
Both are general messaging: channels, threads, people. Neither models a discussion bound to a customer, an order or a ticket, visible to whoever opens that record next — which is the thing our chat was built thin in order to do.
The workspace argument is the same one, one level up
If you are choosing a suite because the chat comes with it, the same reasoning says the mail and files should come with the business software — and log back to the record they concern rather than to a folder somebody named.
Where all of them are ahead of us
Rutba Chat is in early access and Slack is a better chat product than ours by a distance. We would not move a working team off it, and our Slack page says so.

Written to the same standard: sourced to what each vendor publishes, dated, and naming where each one wins.
The pillar
Rutba vs Google Workspace and Microsoft 365
The workspace incumbents, and the best in the world at what they do. The comparison is not about mail quality — it is about what the mail knows.
The pillar
Rutba vs Slack
The team chat standard. Better than ours at being a chat app — and structurally unable to do the one thing ours was built for.
